10th IWA Specialist Group Conference on Ponds Technology: Advances and Innovations in Wastewater Pond Technology &

3rd Latin American Ponds Conference to be run in parallel sessions.

The conference will take place in the historic city of Cartagena de Indias, in the touristic area of Bocagrande. Cartagena de Indias is also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area of the city lies on the north west of Colombia on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. Further information on the specific location of the conferences will be posted in early November.

Waste Stabilisation Ponds and their related systems have a key role to play in the future of sustainable wastewater management. There are many environmental drivers that are leading to the upfront positioning of this natural technology in today’s environmental management. Water utilities are currently engaging with the energy-water nexus. Thus, relevant issues and questions arise, such as ¿How can we responsibly manage wastewater treatment while protecting the environment and human health, but at the same time reduce our contribution to climate change via increased energy efficiency in the actual processes or eventually recovering energy from the wastewater itself? On the other hand, many parts of the world have recently suffered or are suffering from severe droughts. A plausible response is then to increase and make feasible treated wastewater and bio-solids or sludge reuse schemes. Therefore, the field of scientific and technological development of wastewater pond technology and related systems by incorporating energy issues, GHG management and by-products recovery aimed at reducing the footprint of the technology is a must for the current environmental engineering practice. These challenges and few others are all themes within the programme of the forecoming IWA 10th Specialist Group Conference on Ponds Technology. The expert peer review process to be provided by the Conference International Scientific Committee reassures that the papers presented will be of the highest quality and reflect the state of the art in the field. The best papers selected will be published in the international IWA journal Water Science and Technology.
