The conference is organised by The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS, part of Erasmus University Rotterdam), Qoin, New Economics Foundation and Palmas Institute. It seeks to discuss the social, economic and political significance of multiple currency systems for development. The program will be in English, Spanish and Dutch, and is meant to attract academics, policy-makers, (local) government officials and practitioners working in the field of Community Currencies. The plan for the 5-day conference is as follows: · June 19 and June 20: Academic Conference focussed on researchers (organised by the ISS); · June 21: Policy Conference focused on (local) governmental officials and policy-makers (organised by Qoin); · June 22 and June 23: Open Space Conference focused on practitioners and experts (organised by new economics foundation); The conference aims to bring the attention to the great variety of community and complementary currency systems existing nowadays and explore their potential to combat unemployment, support the local economy, enhance community and social networks and meet environmentally responsible purposes. The format was designed to offer a great opportunity to exchange innovative ideas, get insights on legal issues besides exploring how such systems can be employed to meet social goals while saving on government budget expenses.
