Advanced Project Management Academy

Module I: Advanced Project Control, 16-18 September 2013, Johannesburg, South Africa

Module II: Risk-Based Project Auditing, 19-20 September 2013, Johannesburg, South Africa

Module I: Advanced Project Control

Improving accuracy of project estimates and integrating scope, schedule & cost management for successful project delivery

After projects enter the execution phase, the emphasis of the project manager’s effort changes from planning to controlling the work. Control of the project is most effective when the control process integrates scope management with cost and schedule management.

In order to properly control the project, it must be thoroughly planned and the metrics well defined. Once the detailed planning is complete and baselined, the most effective way to control is by using Earned Value Management. But EVM has its own costs and overhead associated with it and may not be worthwhile for small or medium-size projects. For these projects, you can create solid integrated control processes without setting up an EVM system. This course will show you how to control projects both with EVM and without EVM.

The class approach is highly interactive with a variety of exercises supplementing the presentation material. Calculators will be needed.

Course Highlights

·         Understand the critically of integrated control

·         Determine the appropriate metrics for the project

·         Control scope, schedule, and cost in an integrated process

·         Learn the impacts of scope changes to both schedule and cost

·         Place all basic documents under configuration management

·         Identify the impacts on project costs and schedule due to risks

·         Forecast future progress based on actual progress

·         Master Earned Value Management (EVM) to control complex projects

Module II: Risk-Based Project Auditing

Mitigating risk and cost by successfully audit and monitor projects

Scrutiny of projects can provide assurance that projects are managed in a way that mitigates risk. Without monitoring, projects can spin silently out of control. At some point, it may be apparent that the project is over budget, late or both. However, by this time, resources and time have generally been wasted. Such costs can run into the millions. Learn what to look for so you can successfully audit and monitor projects.

Course Highlights

·         Understand what constitutes a well-managed project

·         Explain the concepts of controls and governance in a project setting

·         Learn the common problems experienced in projects and typical solutions

·         Evaluate projects effectively

·         Determine if a project demonstrates good project management practices

·         Identify your strengths and weaknesses in auditing projects

·         Plan how to improve your skills further

“With your help, the project was delivered on time and under budget (which must be a first for us). The take up was about 70%... this translated into savings in the first period of about £62,000 giving an annualised saving of more than £800,000… it clearly demonstrates the significant (and immediate) financial benefit to the Company.”
