The purpose of this conference is to provide opportunities for aromatherapists, nurses, massage therapists, related specialty practitioners and students to meet, discuss and learn about current aromatherapy methodologies and research.
Rhiannon Lewis (formerly Harris) FIFPA Keynote Speaker
Working at the Coalface: Expanding Clinical Aromatherapy Through Research-Informed Practice
Rhiannon is an experienced aromatherapist, educator and author. As editor of the International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy and director of Essential Oil Resource Consultants in Provence, she travels widely to promote clinical aromatherapy. In 2012 she organized and hosted an international conference of plant therapeutics and Clinical Aromatherapy in Dublin, Ireland and is set to do the same in 2014.
Over the past 20 years, the field of aromatherapy has evolved into distinct areas of expertise and practice. Clinical aromatherapy is one such area and its successful integration into healthcare settings has been largely due to therapists translating research into practice. This presentation demonstrates how such a pragmatic “coalface” approach is dependent on a rigorous evidence base in order to ensure the ongoing expansion of clinical aromatherapy worldwide.
Robert Tisserand is an aromatherapy author and educator with 40 years experience. In 2010-2012 he inspired live audiences in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan. Robert has written three books, and tracks all the published research on essential oils.
Pre-Conference Workshop: Clinical Safety for Aromatherapy: The Way Forward We will discuss safety in relation to all body systems, focusing on drug interactions, pregnancy and cancer. Understanding and applying some basic principles enables practitioners to make informed decisions. Pertinent information includes essential oil composition, when to extrapolate constituent data, differentiating hazard and risk, and weighing benefit against risk.
Conference Program: Essential Oils: Safety Scares & Myths
Is tea tree shampoo estrogenic? Is thyme oil hypertensive? Does lavender oil kill skin cells? Safety issues may be generated by well-intentioned aromatherapists, quackbusting doctors, organizations with their own agenda, or the “internet genie.” It can be difficult to figure out what’s going on, and some outcomes may be surprising.

Aromadynamics: Qi, Prana, and Pneuma of Essential Oils
Gabriel Mojay is a UK-registered practitioner of clinical aromatherapy, herbal medicine, and acupuncture. He first studied natural medicine in 1978, specializing in shiatsu therapy and Oriental diagnosis. Following four years of training in TCM, he became in 1987 a member of the British Acupuncture Council. He first trained in botanical medicine and aromatherapy in the 1980s, and has since studied with some of the world’s leading experts in clinical aromatherapy.
The aromadynamics of essential oils refers in simple terms to their therapeutic effects according to established theories of vital energy; in particular, to traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic, and ancient Greek medicine. This presentation will compare and contrast the fundamental principles that inform these systems, distilling them to elucidate ten key olfactory-energetic body-mind actions: a rational-intuitive framework which aromatherapists can use to refine and expand their clinical formulating.
Crucially, the presentation will also call attention to the fact that the energetic and scientific therapeutics of essential oils are by no means inherently divergent, and that contemporary research frequently clarifies and confirms their aromadynamic properties
