The conference will be a significant event of the cleft world, presenting the best keynote talks: Brian Sommerlad (cleft surgeon) and prof. William Shaw (orthodontist / European research coordinator). Other confirmed speakers will be prof. Michele Rubini (geneticist) and prof. Helen Dolk (or representative) from EUROCAT and more to be announced. EUROCleftNet research conference is oriented to: • Epidemiologists • Geneticists • Gene/Environment researchers • Peri-conceptional researchers • Neonatologists • Obstetricians • Cleft Surgeons • Specialist cleft nurses • Orthodontists • Speech therapists • Psychologists • Representatives from patient groups • Representatives from birth defects registers eg. Eurocat • Industry • High tech imaging (diagnostics/audit measurement) • Pharmaceutical companies (vitamin supplements etc) • Researchers/scientists/clinicians from Eastern Europe • Representatives from public health bodies • Experts in translational issues (research to user benefit) Main streams in working sessions are divided into two sections: Research into improving treatment (diagnostics, audit, surgery, ortho, nursing, speech, psychology) and Research into Prevention (epidemiology, genetic, environment, gene/environment interaction, diet).
Dr Martin Persson is a psychologist and a senior research fellow at The Cleft Collective, University West of England.
Brian Sommerlad is Honorary Consultant Plastic Surgeon with the North Thames Cleft Lip and Palate Centre, based at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London and the St Andrew’s Centre, Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford.
Prof William Shaw graduated in Dentistry in 1968, in his home town, Glasgow. He subsequently obtained post grad qualifications in dental surgery and orthodontics in Manchester then held academic clinical posts in Cardiff, where he completed a doctoral thesis.
