Additional Information

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, they keynote speaker of the Humanities conference is Giannina Braschi, a New York-based novelist and poet who writes in three languages—Spanish, Spanglish, and English.

Braschi is one of Puerto Rico's most influential writers; her cutting-edge work has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts, NY Foundation for the Arts, El Diario, PEN, Ford Foundation, Reed Foundation, Danforth Scholarship and Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña.  She was featured in Caras as one of the greatest figures of Puerto Rico today.

Braschi's newest book “United States of Banana” is a dramatic novel in which Braschi creates a post-9/11 world rocked by an unexpected power shift and struggling to realign itself in favor of liberty.  Her work captures the cultural experience of nearly 50 million Hispanic Americans and also seeks to explore the three political options of Puerto Rico—Nation, Colony, or Statehood. “Revolutionary in subject and form, ’United States of Banana‘ is a beautifully written declaration of personal independence,” declared Barney Rosset of The Evergreen Review. In her exuberant prior novel “Yo-Yo Boing!,” Braschi reveals the Hispanic-American experience by creating a chorus of immigrant voices from varied backgrounds. “Empire of Dreams” is a postmodern literary classic, hailed by the Daily News for its “’assertion’ of the vitality of Latino culture in the U.S.
