This 1-day course covers practical methods for designing and evaluating fracture treatments in shales and other tight formations. Hydraulic fracturing treatments are a relatively minor component of conventional oil and gas development but the treatments are very different, and extremely more important, for unconventional reservoirs. This course is intended for engineers and geologists in the oil and gas industry wanting to know more about treatment design and the information needed to forecast and refine the results for unconventional reservoirs. Actual field data will be presented to illustrate how and why treatments are modified, resulting in different treatments for different plays and areas.

Computer simulation will not be covered but example problems will involve attendees solving basic equations.   Those interested in a less technical review of the following topics should consider the course titled "Introduction to Hydraulic Fracturing for Shale Reservoirs".

Conference Speakers

Steve Hennings is Unconventional Gas Manager for Source Rock Engineering, in Littleton, Colorado. He is a registered professional engineer and holds degrees in Petroleum Engineering and in Finance. Steve has 30 years of industry experience which have included various field, office, and research center assignments covering every phase of oil and gas exploration and development. His focus for the past nine years has been on Coal Gas, Coal Mine Methane and Shale Gas development in Canada, Australia, China, Indonesia, India, Turkey and the United States. During the past four years, Steve has conducted private and public Coalbed Methane and Shale Gas workshops in nine countries. The courses have focused on various primary topics including drilling, completions, testing, computer simulation, operations, reservoir engineering and development fundamentals. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious annual Stefanko Award from the Society of Mining Engineers for his technical contributions.
