The UME-conference (2013) is an international conference which focuses on aspects of Urban Multilingualism and Education. As a consequence of global migration waves, the use of languages other than the local, official languages has increased enormously, especially so in urban contexts. Multilingualism and diversity are increasing in the contemporary world. In addition, due to technical developments and structural changes in society (Internet, computer games, etc.) more people have knowledge of and make active use of more than one language. In addition, people also engage in translanguaging, between and across different language varieties like dialects, regional languages, youth language, global registers, etc. What are the implications of these contemporary multilingual realities for educational processes? Can multilingualism be exploited as an aid instead of being treated as a deficit?
UME offers a forum to discuss, compare and exchange knowledge and experiences about this theme by connecting researchers from various disciplines ((psycho)linguistics, education, sociology, etc.).
