Mothers and Daughters: Embracing a Positive Self Image in a Body Conscious World
Organization: The Renfrew Center
|Event Date/Time: Oct 25, 2012 / 7:00 pm - (CST)||End Date/Time: Oct 25, 2012 / 9:00 pm - (CST)|
In this community event, the complex mother-daughter relationship will be highlighted as we explore how to help mothers and daughters stay authentic and resilient in a culture driven by a relentless pursuit for perfection. Body image and self-esteem will be addressed from the perspective of two individuals who have recovered from an eating disorder – one affected at a very early age and one who entered treatment in mid-life. Each speaker's riveting journey to recovery will provide a message of hope and optimism to anyone who has ever questioned whether she is "good enough."
The program will address how even the most well-meaning parents can often unwittingly pass on messages that might not be helpful to their daughters' developing, and often fragile, self-worth. Laurie Cooper, PsyD, one of The Renfrew Center's Site Directors, will speak on how women and girls of all ages are vulnerable to the messages presented by advertisers and the media. A question and answer period will round out the program.
