PNC conference will look at drugs, alcohol and tobacco policy and practice at national and local level.
Plotting a New Course – examining the new policy and practice landscape
Over the two days this latest event in the ‘plotting a new course’ series offers participants a unique opportunity to both hear about how new developments in the UK will impact on alcohol, drugs and tobacco policies and future practice, as well as having the opportunity to consider the immediate practical implications.
Under different initiatives and legislation – Public Health England, the integration agenda in Scotland, ‘21st Century Healthcare’ in Wales – a common theme of a ‘joined-up’ approach is evident. The incorporation of how we address ‘substance use’ into the wider public health agenda has potential for a more holistic approach, but may also have implications for resourcing.
The two days of the conference are linked, to provide both information, as well as an opportunity to simulate what the new policy and practice context might mean in practical terms for policy reformers, consumers, commissioners, service providers, patients/service users and welfare recipients.
Both days will be a mix of presentations by leading figures and facilitated discussions, to examine current policy issues with respect to drugs, alcohol and tobacco, the nature and extent of problems, the state of the evidence and the new public health policy drivers.
The aim if the conference is to enable participants to have an understanding of the impact of the imminent changes on their work, including ‘what do we need’ – reconciling competing local demands on resources - ‘what do we do’ – how strategy and practice might develop - and the relationships between national policy developments, local policy and implementation.
The two days will provide essential information, opportunity for debate and discussion and valuable experiential training for, amongst others, all those working on drug, alcohol and tobacco issues including police, health services, specialist drugs alcohol, tobacco and sexual health services, Health and Wellbeing Boards, community groups, patient advocacy groups, Clinical Commissioning Groups, private sector providers, hospitality trade.
