European countries are sitting on considerable amounts of unconventional gas resources. With many of the countries concerned being highly import dependent at present, the confirmation of unconventional resources represent a promising alternative. However, there are various challenges needed to be overcome first, such as public acceptance, regulatory constraints, and lack of sufficient infrastructure. Significantly, the ban on hydraulic fracturing has been lifted in the United Kingdom, as well as a vote in the German Federal Parliament rejecting a veto of this technique. Will these positive signals influence the mood in Europe towards faster development of unconventional resources?
