Description

The Surgical Technology and Robotics course provides a systematic overview of the use, potential benefits and dangers of technology in modern surgery. It gives an exceptional opportunity for an introduction, with hands-on experience, to leading edge modern surgical technology such as the Da Vinci robot. Offered by Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and the Department for Continuing Education’s CPD Centre, the taught week features face-to-face lectures, tutorials, individual mentor sessions and surgical simulation. There is also a one-day visit to a hospital site outside of Oxford. The Surgical Technology and Robotics course provides the opportunity to learn more about and discuss the following topics:

  •     Laparoscopic surgery ergonomics and difficulties
  •     Minimally-invasive surgery technology and robotic surgery
  •     Cutting and coagulation technology in theatre
  •     Imaging in theatre
  •     Stapling and anastomotic technology
  •     Electronic patient records
  •     Computer decision support systems.

The course begins with basic explanations of the fundamentals of electronics and computing, and the physics involved in modern surgical and diagnostic technologies. Technology relevant to the modern surgeon is then discussed with reference to its principles, proper use and risks
