Abstract Deadline Extended: 21 August 2000

Call for Papers

Recently significant interest and work in gossamer structures exist to meet the future challenges of large, ultra-lightweight spacecraft, space observatories and structures for use on planetary surfaces. The technology promises to fulfill future requirements with significantly reduced cost and a shortened schedule. Our objective is to provide a forum for discussion of potential application, research results, presentation of ground tests, flight experiments, and application.

Subjects of interest related to gossamer spacecraft and technology development include requirements, systems, analyses, design, subsystems, manufacturing, qualification, standards, and databases related to space inflatables and technology development. Applications of interest for space systems include antennas, radiators, shields, habitats, arrays, reflectors, optics and collectors for space systems. Papers of interest include technical issues related to system concepts, applications, simulation tools, pressurization, materials, structures, structural dynamics, controls, thermal control, rigidization, deployment, folding packaging, space effects, ground testing, manufacturing inspection, flight testing, and other activities necessary to lead to reliable gossamer spacecraft.

New Abstract Submittal Requirements
This year, abstract submissions for the conference will be accepted electronically through AIAA's Web site at address This Web site will be open for submittal of abstracts starting 12 June 2000. The system will allow for file upload in the following formats: Word, WordPerfect, Text, RTF, and PDF. When submitting through the Web site, please be sure to designate "Gossamer Spacecraft Forum" under the SDM Conference directory when asked to which conference/ forum you are submitting.

Authors having trouble submitting abstracts electronically should e-mail AIAA technical support at: Questions about the abstracts themselves or manual abstract submissions should be referred to the Forum Technical Program Chair. Other inquiries should be directed to the Forum General Chair.
