Description KEYNOTE AND FEATURED SPEAKERS

Ray Bradbury has written more than 500 published works that include short stories, novels, plays, screenplays, television scripts and verse. Best known among his books are The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Fahrenheit 451, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Widely regarded as the most important figure in the development of science fiction as a literary genre, Ray Bradbury's work evokes the themes of censorship, technology, nuclear war, humanistic values and the importance of imagination.
Rosalind Picard earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering with highest honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology and was named an NSF Fellow. She earned the M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1991 she joined the MIT Media Laboratory as Assistant Professor, and in 1992 was appointed to the NEC Development Chair in Computers and Communications. She was appointed to Associate Professor in 1995. The author of over 60 publications in pattern recognition, multidimensional signal modeling and computer vision, Picard is known internationally for pioneering research into digital libraries and content-based video-retrieval as well as for leading new research in "affective computing." Her recent award winning book, Affective Computing, lays the groundwork for giving machines the skills of emotional intelligence.
Oliver Sacks is a world-renowned neurologist, humanist and bestselling author of astonishing case histories. His book Awakenings inspired both a play and the Penny Marshall film starring Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams. He has written a total of seven books including The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, The Island of the Colorblind, and An Anthropologist on Mars, a collection of clinical tales. One of these tales inspired the feature film At First Sight starring Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino. Dr. Sacks holds degrees in Physiology, Biology and Biochemistry from Oxford. He is currently writing a memoir and is a member of the faculty at New York University Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

ARE YOU A FULL-TIME TEACHING FACULTY MEMBER AND WANT TO ATTEND THE TWELFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COLLEGE TEACHING AND LEARNING AND PAY NO REGISTRATION FEE? READ ON...

The conference committee is seeking creative, original Web-based materials to be displayed and demonstrated at the conference's software fair. Each author (or sponsor) will be provided with a waiver for the full conference registration fee. Basic criteria for submission of materials are listed below.

Materials may be in any academic field, but they must be appropriate for use at the higher education level.
Materials must be available for use either commercially or through the author, her/his college or university, or other relevant source.
The author must be a full-time faculty member and s/he or her/his designee must agree to provide the display devices needed, and to demonstrate the materials at the conference Thursday evening, April 19, 2001.
Materials will be juried by a conference committee of faculty and professional staff. Acceptance will be based on estimated value of the materials to motivate students to learn, and ability of materials to help students understand basic concepts in the academic field concerned.
Submissions must include the completed form below and include the URL, ID and password access information to the online materials. Materials must be submitted by December 1, 2000. Notification of acceptance will be made by January 31, 2001.
