The 7TMD receptor gene family comprises some ~1-2% of products of ORFs in mammalian genomes. The family also constitutes a major target for drugs (~40% for GSK; Terstappen & Reggiani, TIPS, Jan. 2002, p23) and sensory compounds. Now crystal structures for one 7TMD (bacteriorhodopsin) and one GPCR (rhodopsin) have been reported to advance the field. Biophysical studies are giving structure-function information, and this will be the major topic of the meeting.
