This 'vehicle' is made up of 2 components: Overseas Clinical Research and Intellectual Property. Since it costs an average of $500 million to develop a new drug, any cost reducing measure is, by definition, a very attractive proposition. One means of keeping costs down is to carry out clinical research in the developing world. In order for this to happen however, the set-up in the country must be totally conducive to the clinical research process. It is imperative that the drug companies can place their complete confidence in the venture and in those handling it. They need to feel sure that their innovation is being safeguarded. Herein lies the link between clinical research and intellectual property.
