Description SCOPE

BIANISOTROPICS 2002 – 9th International Conference/Workshop on
Electromagnetics of Complex Media will be organized by both University Cadi Ayyad,
FSTG Gueliz, Marrakech - Morocco and University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris –
France. The beautiful town of Marrakech has been selected as the location for the
conference.

The scope of the meeting encompasses a broad spectrum from fundamental theoretical
work on electromagnetics relating to complex media to technological applications for
novel devices from the microwaves to the optical regime.

The conference will comprise 5-6 half-day sessions on a variety of research concerned
with theory and applications of composite and complex media pertaining to
electromagnetics (i.e. chiral media, pseudochiral media, anisotropic media, bianisotropic
media, temporally agile media, nonlocal media, nonlinear media, random media,
metamaterials, photonic bandgap materials, multifunctional materials, functional gradient
materials, piezoelectric, ferroelectric thin films...).

The topics of interest include but are not limited to :

Electromagnetic theory of bianisotropic media
Radiation and propagation of electromagnetic waves in chiral and bianisotropic
media
Waveguides and printed structures using chiral and bianisotropic media
Scattering by bodies with complex media and complex shapes
Inverse scattering techniques for complex materials
Electromagnetics of nonlinear media
New microwave and optical devices using complex media
Modeling and applications of composite materials
Experimental research on complex composite materials

Historical background

After Helsinki (Finland, Bi-isotropics'93 - Workshop on Novel Microwave Materials,
February 1993); Gomel (Belarus, Bianisotropics'93 - Seminar on Electrodynamics of
Chiral and Bianisotropic Media, October 1993); Périgueux (France, Chiral'94 - 3rd
International Workshop on Chiral, Bi-isotropic and Bi-anisotropic Media, May 1994);
Pennsylvania (USA, Chiral'95 - International Conference on the Electromagnetic
Effects of Chirality and its Applications, October 1995); St. Petersburg - Moscow
(Russia, Chiral'96 - NATO Advanced Research Workshop, July 1996); Glasgow
(Great Britain, Bianisotropics'97 - International Conference and Workshop on
Electromagnetics of Complex Media, June 1997); Braunschweig (Germany,
Bianisotropics'98 - 7th International Conference on Complex Media, June 1998);
Lisbon (Portugal, Bianisotropics'2000 - 8th International Conference on Complex
Media, September 2000);

Marrakech in Morocco will host Bianisotropics'2002 that will be the 9th in a series of
loosely connected international conferences and workshops concerned with all aspects
of electromagnetics relating to novel materials.

Since their inception in 1993 these conferences/workshops have proved highly
successful meetings for scientists actively working in this particular area of research.
They have provided a stimulating setting for the exchange of research results, the
development of new directions of theoretical and experimental research and the fostering
of new research collaborations. Equally importantly, they have provided a platform for
vital mutual interaction between East and West in attracting scientists from the Former
Soviet Union, their participation made possible through generous grants. Today, by
organising this meeting in Marrakech, one of our principal objectives is the establishment
of a new scientific dialogue between the north and the south.
