The First International ANCA Workshop was organized by Niels Rasmussen and convened in Copenhagen, January 1989. Thirty-five investigators from Europe and the USA came together to discuss new findings regarding antigenic targets of ANCA and idiopathic small-vessel vasculitides. In part, based on that meeting and subsequent workshops in Europe and in the USA, knowledge about the molecular identity of ANCA antigens and their possible pathogenic roles progressed at a remarkable pace. ANCA were established as useful markers for certain small vessel vasculitides. Recent workshops sought to broaden the scope of discussions to include all idiopathic vasculitides. New insights into mechanisms of vascular injury have led to the workshop becoming an international gathering place for clinicians and scientists from numerous specialties such as nephrology, rheumatology, pulmonary diseases, cardiology, infectious diseases, otolaryngology, vascular medicine, surgery, imaging, molecular biology, genetics and basic immunology.
