Aldous Huxley’s (British novelist 1894-1963) portrait of the future is upon us sooner than we might expect as we face the new and exciting challenges of teaching and learning in a brave new world. A technologically enabled globalisation process has brought in its wake many issues and opportunities. In education, buzzwords, reform fads and globalisation rhetoric compete for the attention of every stakeholder. One has to contend with the growing interests and demand for borderless education, virtual universities, smart schools, distance/open learning and other forms of remote delivery of courses and flexible lifelong learning. Whether we are leaders, managers or simply students of teaching and learning, we are challenged to respond swiftly and intelligently before this whirlwind of change overwhelms us. In this conference we will look at the technological or hardware and software aspects of teaching and learning in a borderless world. However, we should also like to draw attention to the equally important but often neglected human aspects of globalisation: issues in the internationalisation of curricula and pedagogy, of multiculturalism and international understanding, issues which have since September 11 cried out for change in the way we teach and the things our students learn.
