Technological advances in biomedical imaging are providing unprecedented opportunities for improving our understanding of biological processes and revealing the anatomical and functional organization of biological systems from macro- to nanoscale. Research in this area is progressing at an extraordinary rate and is becoming more and more interdisciplinary. The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMB-S) and the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SP-S) have joined forces with the NIH National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) to bring together, through this new symposium, researchers and practitioners with different backgrounds – but with a common interest in biological and medical imaging – to share their knowledge and address the latest challenges in data acquisition, image reconstruction, image processing, analysis, and visualization. Fostering interaction and cross-fertilization, this event will contribute to a fully integrated approach to biomedical imaging through all scales of observation.
