This year's meeting will take place from October 20-23, 2002 in Baltimore, Maryland. The meeting hotel is the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel, located in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore. The 24th SMDM Annual Meeting will have as its theme "Genomics and Decision Making." The meeting will feature both a plenary abstract session and a panel discussion on the impact of the genomics revolution on diagnostic testing and therapy decisions, with keynote speaker Alan Guttmacher, MD, Senior Clinical Advisor to the Director, National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Guttmacher will be joined by our own Nananda Col, MD, MPH, and by Niel A. (Tony) Holtzman, MD, MPH who bring academic perspectives.
Principles of diagnostic selection and interpretation are being redefined by the genetic revolution. Policy and decision making questions which arise from the availability of very expensive yet highly accurate genetic information have yet to be answered. Similar questions abound regarding therapy informed by newly available genetic information. The emerging discipline of bioinformatics is interfacing with medical decision making via genetic information. We encourage submission of abstracts dealing with these important issues, the best of which will be showcased in the above-mentioned special plenary session.
In addition this year, we want to reinvigorate the traditional multidisciplinary participation in our meeting. Special sessions are being planned to cover judgment and decision making, physician cognition and behavior, and technology assessment. We especially encourage submissions in these areas. Abstracts for oral and poster presentations will be selected by reviewers representing a range of disciplines, blinded to authorship.
Deadline for receipt of abstracts in the SMDM administrative office is
Friday, May 31, 2002.
Submissions received after that date will not be accepted. Please refer to the Abstract Submission Instructions and the Abstract Submission Form for complete abstract preparation guidelines. The full presentation schedule for accepted abstracts will be posted on the Society's web site (www.smdm.org) by the end of August, 2002. Full text of accepted abstracts will appear in the November-December issue of our bi-monthly journal Medical Decision Making.
In a subsequent mailing, you will receive an Annual Meeting overview, short course descriptions, hotel and travel information including information about Baltimore and our social event at the National Aquarium, and a meeting registration form. The 24th SMDM Annual Meeting will provide a great opportunity to hear about cutting-edge research across a spectrum of disciplines with good friends in a convivial and supportive atmosphere.
We look forward to your submissions, and we'll see you in Baltimore.
