The EUROCONFERENCE on "Depression" will focus on the emerging biology and treatments of this disorder. Depression affects a substantial proportion of the population and has been reported by the World Health Organization and the World Bank to be the fourth cause of disability worldwide (second in developed countries). Because of its high prevalence and chronicity, antidepressant response is still a key pharmacological target for new drug development. In spite of a long history, progress in understanding the biology of this disorder has been slow. The reasons for this will be discussed. Attendees of the conference will learn the clinical and biological aspects of this common and complex disorder and will also learn the state of the art of our understanding of psychosocial, environmental and genetic aspects of depression. The features, advantages, and limitations of animal models will be presented. Candidate biological systems and genetic approaches will be reviewed. The biochemical and molecular basis for existing treatments will be discussed, along with strategies for the use of genomic tools to discover new targets for antidepressants and to predict therapeutic outcomes. The speakers are internationally recognized experts from leading academic and industrial settings.
