Invitation and Welcome:

Dear colleague,

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I am pleased to invite you to the XIX International Congress of the Society "THE FETUS AS A PATIENT", which will be held in Barcelona, in May 2003.

The mission of the Organising Committee is not only to prepare an excellent Congress, with the participation of the most prestigious world professionals in Perinatal Medicine, but also to give you the opportunity to enjoy some wonderful days in SITGES, Barcelona, one of the most charming places of the Spanish Mediterranean coast.

The Congress will use a very attractive formula: permanent debate. Instead of the classic scientific meetings with one lecture after the other and a great deal of information but little discussion, in SITGES all will be controversial sessions. The hottest or more controversial perinatal issues will be discussed and analysed. Particularly those issues with a special interest for perinatologists. It is the success of the "Controversy Sessions" in the 5th World Congress of Perinatal Medicine (Barcelona, September 2001), which has led has to adopt this dynamic formula. Impossible for the participant to get bored! An excellent service of simultaneous translation will help the attendants not to miss a detail of the discussions.

Moreover, all the sessions of the Congress will take place in a single room and the professors invited will stay in the same hotel as the participants, which will contribute to the exchange of views and opinions at all times during the congress.

The venue of the Congress "Gran Sitges Hotel" is just 20 minutes away from Barcelona International Airport. Its location close to the Aiguadolç Marina, its facilities and elegance, make of this hotel a real paradise. On the other hand Sitges is a very attractive town where a totally cosmopolitan way of life coexists with the kind of peaceful atmosphere. A wide selection of cultural, festive and sporting events, kilometres of beaches, a wide range of shops, museums, restaurants and services plus a lot of a leisure activities, all work together to make this Mediterranean coastal town a really engaging and fascinating venue capable of satisfying the most demanding visitor.

An important aspect to take into account is that the possible benefits of the Congress will be totally inverted in the maternal-fetal care in developing countries, through Matres Mundi.

In short, we have prepared for you the best and most interesting Congress ever, in a heavenly place where you will enjoy some wonderful days.

We, the members of the Organising Committee, are looking forward to meeting you personally and helping you have an unforgettable stay in Sitges.

See you in Sitges!

José M. Carrera
Congress President
