Description

Call for Papers
10th International Congress : Istanbul, Turkey
“Animals in Fact, Fable, and Scripture: An Ecumenical Examination.”

Congress Dates: 10-19 July 2003

“Animals in Fact, Fable, and Scripture: An Ecumenical Examination” is an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural look at
how human beings from all walks of life look at, think of, treat/mistreat, write about, teach, learn from, and
cohabitate with animals. This includes—but not limited to—literary and artistic presentations; theoretical and
hermeneutical approaches; zoological and medical perspectives; ethical, religious, and philosophical exegeses;
public, national, and international policy making; commercial and financial considerations; and historical and
fictional narratives.

Papers (in English) are welcome from littérateurs, creative writers, nature writers, and literary scholars; historians;
artists; philosophers; theologians; scientists; economists; ethicists; animal lovers; journalists who cover animal
rights in the media (old journalism adage: “‘Dog bites man’ is not a story, but ‘man bites dog’ is.”); and champions
of animal rights.

N.B. All papers and original fables delivered at the Congress will be considered for publication in Bestia, the
Society’s refereed Yearbook.
