More than 17 million American have diabetes, and statistics indicate that number will rise 200% within the next 30 years. Each year, approximately 800,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes, which is the third most common cause of death in the nation. In the geriatric population alone, TWENTY percent have diabetes. The cost is astronomical; total health care and related costs for treatment of diabetes run about $98 billion a year.
This represents ONE SIXTH of total national health care costs!

In light of these statistics, it is imperative that the healthcare industry takes a proactive approach to quality, coupled with factors such as changes in health care management systems and improvements in therapies available for diabetes. The obvious next step is to establish diabetic care centers within the healthcare setting. The purpose of these centers or clinics is to support basic and clinical research, develop improved treatments for diabetes and to translate those improved treatments into clinical care.
