The organization of this symposium is encouraged by the great success of our previous meetings here on the same topic. One of the major goals of these meetings is the discussion of novel developments
in academic and industrial research concerning neuroprotection and neurorepair. So far, available concepts of
neuroprotection following insults like ischemia or traumatic brain injury have not yet provided the expected, and
necessary, advancements in the field of drug design and development. Our meeting will focus primarily on the
connection between neuroprotection based on state-of-the-art knowledge concerning mechanisms of degeneration
and the inherent potential of the nervous system to undergo repair, with one session in particular involving a
discussion of the potential of approaches using both endogenous and exogenous stem cells.
