The next Regional Conference of the International Geographical Union (IGU) is to be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban, South Africa, from 4 -7 August 2002. The conference theme "Geographical Renaissance at the Dawn of the Millenium", highlights the global and regional challenges currently facing Geography and geographers. The confeence also provides a broader forum at which Earth, Environmental, Development and Social Science issues will be discussed. Concerns such as globalisation, the technological divide, sustainability in rural and urban contextx, environmental degradation and global warming, will feature in the conference deliberations. In addition to the academic programme, a range of scientific and tourist excursions is offered to comlement the formal conference proceedings. There is also an exciting social and cultural programme. Delegates will get to experiance the city oo Durban - a warm African city with a rich ethnic mix, wonderful beaches, intriguing development challenges, and first-class tourism facilities. At the conference itself, the IGU will be honourng Nelson Mandela with the "Planet and Humanity Award".
