Call for posters and papers: We are accepting submissions of technical posters and papers for presentation at the symposium. Please submit an abstract of 300 words or less to dbaker@ku.edu by July 15, 2002. Paper presenters will be allocated 20 minutes, and an additional ten minutes will be allowed for questions. Presentations must be in PowerPoint or slide format. Please indicate for which session (issues, streams, lakes, or wetlands) your topic is appropriate. We request that authors of presented papers provide to us a 3 - 6 page summary paper that will be published in a symposium proceedings. Posters must be limited to dimensions of 3 feet high by 5 feet wide. Display boards will be provided.
Featured speaker: Dr. Donald Huggins
Dr. Donald Huggins has been the Director of the Central Plains Center for BioAssessment since its inception in 1998. He has served as Director of Ecotoxicology and as a senior scientist at the Kansas Biological Survey for nearly 30 years. Dr. Huggins received his Ph.D. from the Department of Environmental Engineering & Sciences at the University of Kansas in 1990. Dr. Huggins' research interests include ecotoxicology and whole ecosystem responses to pollutants, in particular he is interested in the effects of pesticides on lentic macroinvertebrate communities. Dr. Huggins has been the author of numerous articles ranging from a checklist of Kansas dragonflies to structural equation modeling and ecosystem analysis and the effects of hydrophyte community structure on atrazine degradation in wetlands.
Invited speakers:
Randy Apfelbeck has worked as a water quality specialist for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) for the past eleven years and has been developing protocols for assessing aquatic life beneficial uses for Montana’s wetlands, streams and lakes since 1992. Past accomplishments include the development of Montana’s water quality monitoring and assessment guidelines for identifying “impaired” waters for inclusion on the 303(d) list. Currently, he is developing and implementing a statewide water quality monitoring program that will be used to assess water quality status and tends and overall watershed health. Randy has a M. S. degree in Environmental Sciences from Oklahoma State University and a B. S. degree in Water Resource Management and Soil Science from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point.
Dr. John Holz is an Assistant Professor in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska. His research interests are freshwater plankton community structure, lake classification methodology, surface water quality and management, and restoration of environmentally degraded lakes. Dr. Holz supervises the University of Nebraska’s Lake Water Quality Extension Program which educates adults and youth education about lake ecology and management issues and provides technical assistance and funds to Nebraska communities for city park lake restoration projects.
