Conference on The Role of Arts and Music Celebration in Child Abuse Prevention” scheduled for June 26-28 2003 at RADISSON HOTEL SACRAMENTO.
In addition to child abuse and neglect (or child maltreatment in professional parlance), the conference, which truly will be a knowledge synthesis and dissemination forum, will examine prevention and intervention strategies for other serious international child-related issues such as child labor, child soldier, child pornography, child trafficking, child prostitution, and children with HIV/AIDS, especially in African countries.
The two-day discussion series will explore and resolve the seminal question: Can arts and music celebration play a leading role in bringing attention to these important issues that significantly affect millions of children around the world?

The discussions will bring together a cross section of representatives from child abuse prevention community, arts organizations, musicians, DJs, volunteer organizations, state and local agencies and councils to assist Africamix’s volunteers, Board and staff members in developing specific strategies to promote understanding of utilizing volunteer arts and music celebrations in helping to combat child abuse and neglect.
One aspect of the conference is to learn how music can be used in direct services by treating the emotional traumas and psychological scars borne by victims of child abuse, especially sexual abuse. As you know, music therapy is used in mental health treatment, including with physically and sexually abused children and adolescents.
This conference is being designed to have national significance to representatives of child welfare groups and child protection agencies, as well as parents, policy makers and interested members of the public for advancing the role of multicultural music and art celebrations in child abuse prevention through knowledge synthesis and dissemination.
The goal of conference’s knowledge synthesis and dissemination activities are to determine which of the elements of the Africamix’s program that can be replicated or adopted by other communities and how that replication can be achieved. The conference will involve coordinating, exchanging and dissemination knowledge on the role of multicultural music and art celebrations in child abuse prevention to improve the provision of effective primary prevention programs combating child maltreatment.
