Globalization is fast changing the world’s socio-economic scenario. The wide-ranging global changes have in particular transformed both the educational and employment landscape: most global citizens will now need to function competently in social, educational and workplace environments that are international and intercultural in nature. The challenge, in today’s context of a borderless world, is how best to prepare the workforce to meet the ever changing needs.

However, there remains many aspects of the relationship between motivation and learning that are still relatively unexplored. The relationship between motivation and culture is one of them. Little is known about the interplay between cultural background, motivation and learning within multicultural settings. For example, what is the nature of the relationship between motivation, cultural background and learning? How does a multicultural classroom affect the motivation of learners? How do people learn in a multicultural workplace? These issues and other related ones are indeed pressing concerns to all of us as we are swept along the tide of globalization.
