This workshop introduces participants to the many aspects of running a successful cable logging operation and techniques for improving operational efficiency. The workshop will include approximately eight hours of lectures, two hours at the Virginia Tech Harvesting Lab and four hours at the Fishburn Forest operating the Bitterroot Yarder system. The lectures will start with an overview of cable logging systems and continue with various topics that aim to make cable logging operations more efficient. These include planning, machinery selection, and payload optimization. Rigging configurations will be demonstrated and operational issues such as machinery selection and landing layout discussed. Techniques on how to measure efficiency and implement changes will also be covered, as will accurate costing of operations and safety issues.
