"Food Safety and Security" is the theme of the 2003 Conference of the Food Distribution Research Society and was developed in recognition of concerns facing our society and the food industry. What are the major concerns of consumers and how does this affect how we do business today and in the future? How does food safety and the security of our food system change market strategies and the costs associated with changes? What are businesses doing to meet regulatory changes associated with food safety, health claims, and security? What are the opportunities and what business barriers have emerged in relation to food safety and security issues?

Invited speakers from industry, academia, and government will share information about changes taking place in the food system because of concerns about safety and security, here in the United States and around the World. Topics to be explored will include: "Globalization of Food and How Americans Feel about it", "Lessons learned in the meat packing Industry", "Is Aquaculture Safer?", "Functional Foods - Market Trends", "Nutritional Labels and Health claims", "Consumer Response to Food Labeling", plus information on upcoming FDRS study tour to Spain.
