With the exception of small closed meetings, there have been no specific gatherings that focus purely on IL-1 biology in recent years. There has been intense research effort in this area over the last decade and there is now increasing interest in the role of inflammatory mediators in many disease processes. Therefore, the Manchester 2003 meeting is timely, and represents a unique opportunity to gather leading experts in the field here in Manchester, where many important advances in research on IL-1 in the nervous system have taken place.

Topics to be covered:
Key topics will relate to basic mechanisms of IL-1, including processing, release and signal transduction pathways. There will also be detailed discussion of the role of IL-1 in several different processes including learning and memory, depression, sickness behaviour, aging, epilepsy and neurodegenerative disease. This illustrates the diversity of IL-1 actions and the pressing need to fully understand how it acts so that effective therapeutic agents can be developed in the future.

The meeting will use a "Gordon Conference" style format with presentation of unpublished data and long periods of discussion. There will be poster presentations of submitted abstracts, with some being selected by the Programme Commitee to be delivered as short oral communications. Reduced rates will be offered for students.
