The Institute for Leadership in Changing Times was developed to fill a void in the professional development arena for the public safety profession. This program consists of an educational experience that will collectively prepare the individual for continuous learning and professional development in the public safety field. The program is based on developing creative thinking and leadership skills that meet the needs of this rapidly changing field. The program will not teach policing skills, but will focus on the skills necessary to creatively lead changing organizations. This learning experience is broken into three distinct components. The first component is a 5 day intensive residential and classroom learning experience, which is complemented by pre-program assignments. The second component of the program is the application of learning on the job, this includes assignments to be completed while on the job. This component includes continuous feedback with the Virginia Tech faculty. The final component is a 3 day session to assess lasting impacts on behavior as well as evaluating "lessons learned" and "best practices." Both "lessons learned" and "best practices" are business terms popular today in assessing what can be learned and successfully implemented in specific workplaces or different professional settings.
