Description The Inland Northwest Research Alliance (INRA) is a non-profit scientific and educational organization consisting of eight Western research universities (Boise State, Idaho State, Montana State, Utah State, and Washington State Universities; and the Universities of Alaska Fairbanks, Idaho, and Montana). INRA is a partner with Bechtel and BWXT, Inc., in the management and operations contract for the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), operated for the U.S. Department of Energy.

INRA holds an annual Subsurface Science Symposium. This year’s theme is “Advances in Understanding and Modeling Subsurface Processes.” Faculty, students, and staff from all INRA campuses and researchers from INEEL and other academic and government research institutions discuss their work in the various aspects of geochemistry, geophysics, and other disciplines.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Harrison Schmitt, whose titles include: geologist; Apollo astronaut; Lunar Module Pilot; the only scientist to set foot on the Moon; and former senator from New Mexico. His accomplishments on Apollo 17 and his biography are available at:

Plenary speakers include Dr. Terry Hazen from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Dr. Rosemary Knight from Stanford University. Dr. Hazen is the Head of the Microbial Ecology and Environmental Engineering Department at LBNL. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and has authored more than 151 scientific publications, not including more than 358 abstracts and chapters in several books. He received the 1995 R&D 100 Award, 1996 R&D 100 Award, and the 1996 Federal Laboratory Consortium Excellence in Technology Transfer for bioremediation technologies. Dr. Knight is Professor of Geophysics at Stanford, specializing in environmental geophysics. Her research interests include laboratory and theoretical studies of the electrical and elastic properties of fluid-saturated rocks, and the use of various geophysical methods (radar, seismic, nuclear magnetic resonance) for near-surface groundwater and environmental applications.

The Symposium provides unmatched networking opportunity with researchers in several diverse and complimentary technical fields and policymakers who shape the national research agenda. This year, INRA anticipates around 300 attendees, with over 100 invited presentations (on topics in the following areas: Geophysics, Hydrology, Modeling, Bioremediation, Geochemistry, Technology Transfer, Environmental Policy and Management) during the three conference days. In addition to the invited presentations, research posters will be solicited from both INRA and non-INRA university students to participate in a judged competition, where the top three poster winners will receive cash awards totaling $1750. Also, a separate poster session for non-student research posters will also be organized. INRA expects a total of between 50 and 75 posters to be displayed at the 2003 Symposium.
