Description In this age of globalization, effective international communication in business depends on good intercultural understanding. The practices and assumptions operating in one cultural context cannot be taken for granted in another, hence the urgent need to understand how different systems operate. Even though travel has become commonplace, the internet facilitates speedy exchange of information and English has become an international language, channels of communication can be hampered by different expectations, different interpretations of the same message, different systems of value, even different attitudes to everyday behaviour, such as codes of politeness or time-keeping.

In different cultures, the relationship between the world of business and cultural practice also varies a great deal, though increasingly there is greater collaboration between commercial sponsors and cultural practitioners, and signs of a new symbiotic relationship between these two worlds, developing as state-controlled funding of culture declines. There is a need for new models to be developed, whereby those who provide cultural products and those who fund them learn to work more closely together.

This seminar addresses the relationship between culture and business on several levels, drawing upon experts in public policy, arts policy management, intercultural consciousness and cultural diversity. All the distinguished speakers have a track record of working between cultures, some as internationally renowned researchers, some being directly involved in intercultural awareness training and the format of the seminar reflects that diversity. Workshops and lectures will be run by guest speakers, with scheduled interventions by participants to explore issues raised.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE
This seminar will be of interest to communiciations and human resources managers in the public and private sectors, management trainers and intercultural theorists.
