Description Issues crucial to the practice of emergency nursing, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), family presence during end-of-life procedures, violence in the emergency department (ED), hospital and nursing liability associated with staffing patterns, and ED overcrowding dominate the agenda at the Emergency Nurses Association’s (ENA) 2003 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Held September 18-20 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the meeting will feature speakers and faculty who are leaders in their field, including:

Cokie Roberts, award winning ABC journalist and co-anchor of This Week with Sam Donaldson & Cokie Roberts

Elizabeth Norman, noted author of We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese

Richard Paul Evans, bestselling author of The Locket, The Christmas Candle, and The Christmas Box trilogy

“Emergency nursing has always played a critical role in safeguarding our nation’s health and security,” said 2003 ENA President Kathy Robinson. “Current issues such as SARS, terrorist attacks, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have focused public attention on just how critical that role is to each community. I would urge all emergency nurses, and those who are interested in emergency health care, to come to Philadelphia to share in shaping the future of emergency nursing.”
The 2003 meeting features an expanded Center for Advanced Practice Learning with workshops and interactive courses on digital blocks and local anesthetics, fundoscopy, telemedicine, and an in-depth splinting session. Three pre-sessions are available:

A newly revised CEN® (certified emergency nurse) review course

Nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons preparedness for the ED

Emergency Severity Index (ESI): Implementation of a 5-level Triage System.

Expected to draw more than 3,000 ED nurses, the educational program is divided into focus areas including clinical practice, education, research, leadership/professional issues, pediatric emergency health care, and pharmacology. More than 35 clinical sessions will cover issues ranging from end-of-life issues, violence in the emergency department, competency validation programs, medication error rates, hospital and nursing liability associated with staffing patterns, psychiatric pediatric patients, performance benchmarks, ED overcrowding, and EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, 1986). The event will also feature more than 300 exhibitors displaying the latest technology, equipment and resources available.
For more information visit the ENA Web site, www.ena.org, or call 800/243-8362.

The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) is the only professional nursing association dedicated to defining the future of emergency nursing and emergency care through advocacy, expertise, innovation, and leadership. Founded in 1970, ENA serves as the voice of nearly 23,000 members and their patients through research, publications, professional development, injury prevention, and patient education. Additional information is available at ENA’s Web site, at www.ena.org.
