Over the past 10 years, the Healthcare division at the Institute for International Research has recognized the challenges faced by Dental Benefit executives and provided a forum to address the issues and share solutions with your peers. Year after year, we have focused on the timely issues impacting dental insurers and benefits administrators, ranging from the rise of Dental HMOs,key concepts in developing,administering and purchasing Dental PPOs, provider profiling and credentialing, and the ins and outs of fraud prevention. We have debated the strengths of PPO delivery models and explored strategies for PPO recruiting and contracting. Today, we are delighted to present IIR’s Dental Benefit Summit for 2004: Structuring Benefits For a Consumer Driven Market Place.

This outstanding summit offers 3 days of workshops,case studies and interactive panel discussions with the nation’s leading dental experts to provide dental benefit executives the tools required to thrive in the face of a shrinking benefit dollar, increased consumerism,and continued attacks from organized dentistry.

Day One,Wednesday, March 17 opens with a pre-conference workshop titled "Understanding the Fundamentals of Dental Benefits". The workshop is lead by the best-selling author and dental benefits guru, Dr Don Mayes and Dr Lawrence McKinley, VP of Professional Affairs at UCCI.The workshop is designed for those who have limited background in dental, are transitioning to dental benefit administration or those wishing to review the fundamentals before attending the event. This is followed by an afternoon workshop on Best Practices to Ensure Compliance with State and Federal Regulations. This workshop lead by Dr Roger Adams,VP, Professional Relations and Dental Director for Dental Select and an experienced legal expert will help implement best practices to ensure compliance with ERISA and RICO statutes.

On Thursday, March 18 the first day of the main event explores the future of dental benefits.The conference opens with a feature presentation from Mr Sam Westover, President and CEO of Cigna Dental. Mr Westover assesses the future of dental benefits in an era of increasing medical premiums, cost shifting to employees, reduction of ancillary benefits, and a national shortage of dentists.This is followed by a special presentation from a TRICARE representative on the future of the TRICARE Dental Program. Dr Don Mayes and Mr Michael Walsh, CEO of Delta Dental of MN, will also provide a case study on selective contracting and the future of provider network management.

In the afternoon, the focus turns to the provider relations, implementing evidence-based dental care and strategies to improve the business relationship between dental providers and insurers. Dr David Wesley, VP, National Dental Practice, Mutual of Omaha and Dr Fred Tye, Chief Dental Officer, Doral Dental USA, provide an in-depth look at provider profiling, utilization review and other strategies to detect and minimize abuses within the network.This is followed by a case study on implementing evidence based dental care from Dr Robert Compton, Director of Disease Management, Delta Dental Plan of MA. Afterwards Dr Steven H. Keller, President,Dentaquest, provides a case study on improving provider relations through fairness,administrative simplification, and clear communication.The day closes with an interactive panel discussion on strategies to improve the industry’s business relationship with dentists and organized dentistr y.

On Friday, March 19, the faculty provide strategies for improving product management, developing and differentiating in an era of consumerism. Joe Witkowski, President, PPO USA, opens the day with a case study on effectively managing a Dental PPO.This is followed by a session from Bret Guenther, President,Dentistat and Herschel Reich, VP Group Dental, Guardian Life Insurance Company, on implementing innovative network management technologies and web-based tools to streamline dental benefit management.Then Cathye Smithwick, Consultant, Mercer Human Resource Consulting, offers innovative product design strategies to help dental plans meet employer needs.

The conference draws to a close with two case studies on the recent ADA allegations against the insurance industry. In the first case study, David B Morse, Legal Counsel,Delta Dental of MN, discusses defending against the recent class-action lawsuits involving UCR reimbursement.The second features Richard J. Doren, Partner, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher who details the settlement between the ADA and Aetna, Inc.The conference closes with an interactive panel discussion assessing the impact of recent ADA charges against the Dental Insurance industry.
