The 2004 Summer Research Conference (SRC) in Statistics, sponsored jointly by the Southern Regional Council on Statistics and the American Statistical Association, will be held June 6-8, 2003, Blacksburg, Virginia. The general philosophy of the SRC is to present and promote cutting-edge research and new directions in statistics, as well as to foster discussion of current and future issues in statistical education and training. For many participants this conference provides an entry into new research topics. Young statisticians are thus afforded a broad view of current activity in the discipline in a relatively short time frame and small conference setting. The SRC in 2004 "Statistics: Methodologies and Applications" emphasizes a broad spectrum but interrelated set of statistical methodologies. As these areas are presently of high interest across many disciplines, it is expected that many fruitful collaborations will result among participants. Invited sessions will include Bay! esian methodologies, statistical finance, Markov chains, design of experiments, generalized linear models, functional data analysis, as well as case studies in environmental statistics and new advances in education and training of students of statistics. Technical presentations will be geared toward the general statistical audience providing both the breadth and depth of the topic. A Contributed Poster session will highlight junior researchers, including graduate students. The SRC will be small, approximately 70-90 participants, which will allow much interaction for the three working days of the conference.
