The European Medical Writers Association <<>> (EMWA) is an association that aims to promote standards of excellence in medical writing by furthering the professional development of members and increasing awareness of medical writing throughout Europe.

EMWA now has over 300 members from 20 countries, and includes academics and professionals working in-house or freelance for pharmaceutical and medical communications companies, research institutes, and in the field of scientific journalism.

The forum for training with EMWA is its annual conference, held in a different European city each spring, which provides a wonderful opportunity for networking, strengthening your writing skills and sending out feelers to get a sense of other areas you might have been contemplating exploring as a writer. Under the EMWA Professional Development Programme <<>>, by completing a set of defined courses, a certificate can be earned that vouches for your training as a medical writer.

The next annual conference will be held in Budapest on the 20th - 24th April 2004. This is an excellent opportunity for medical writers to update their skills or network with other writers and indeed possible employers. As at previous conferences, we will be offering a comprehensive workshop programme - nearly 40 are planned, on topics ranging from public speaking to the clinical development programme, and from publication planning to Word macros. And there will be not-to-be-missed social events, including a boat trip, wine tasting and a guided walk around Budapest. More details can be found in the conference section of the website (
