Description

The incredible advances in genomics and proteomics of the last decade are expected to lead to an increase of the use of laboratory animals. Fortunately at the same time, in these areas new technologies have been and will be developed that may offer advanced opportunities for the implementation of the Three Rs (Replacement, Reduction and/or Refinement of the use of laboratory animals, known as the Three Rs of Russell and Burch).

A recent Dutch study performed by the Netherlands Centre on Alternatives to Animal Use has showed that genomics/proteomics technology has a significant Three Rs potential. However, it was also concluded that a thorough and systematic inventory and evaluation of these potentials is needed to fully characterise these opportunities.
