Demand for steel making raw materials in Asia is now the key determinant of prices across the globe. At the heart of the Asian success story is China whose rapid economic expansion is the catalyst for the booming steel making raw materials industry throughout the region. China’s consumption of iron ore, scrap and coal from Asia and beyond is currently constrained only by the lack of shipping capacity and inadequate domestic supplies. Increasing raw materials prices is unwelcome to some steel producers across the region however increased input costs are more than matched by increased prices for steel.
