February 23-26, 2005
NAREN 2005 National Conference
Edgewater Beach Resort Hotel, Panama City, Florida
Keynote Speakers
Ian Jukes!
No one knows the future! Not true! Ian Jukes is one of the most respected and accurate forecasters of What Is Going To Happen Next? An entertaining and exciting presenter (did I mention enthusiastic?) who rocks the house down...not with just humor but with the facts to back his predictions. We are indeed privileged to have Ian at Panama City. Visit his website and see him in action on a video clip — you will see what we mean!
Franklin Schargel!
An acclaimed author of 4 cage-rattling books on dropout prevention. In the school system for 33 years, and now Educational Director of the American Society of Quality, Franklin knows what it is like on the frontlines while still having a systemic overview that helps make sense of what we need to improve in at-risk educational programming. A dynamic speaker with much information. Visit Franklin on the web!
We will also have many of YOUR colleagues presenting what they will be doing in numerous breakout sessions. We still have a few openings, so get the form in below if you have something powerful to share.
Five (5) other special happenings at the 2005 Conference:
A Saturday morning panel looking at cultural diversity issues in at-risk education:
Candy Waukau — full-blooded Menominee Indian and Principal of an alternative school
Elvira Cruz — social worker from Texas working with adjudicated Hispanic youth
Janet Mays — Principal of an inner city Black school in Milwaukee
??? - We are still looking for an informed representative from the Asian-American community!! Recommend someone!
Gregg Bretthauer, star of the movie, Supersize Me!, will be speaking on the role of nutrition in at-risk education. Gregg works as curriculum director of an alternative school that is turning the school lunch program on its ear, and discovering that most "discipline problems" disappear!
The band, Deja Vue — (Have Seen Us Before?), will perform live on Friday night. A crackerjack professional band that have you looking for your socks after they rock them off. Deja Vue plays 60s music up to today's music. Some of the more current songs that they do are by artists like Jewel, Sister Hazel, Third Eye Blind, Sheryl Crow, Hootie and the Blowfish, Alanis Morisette, Matchbox 20, Uncle Kracker, and Everclear. Some of the classic rock songs that they do are by groups like Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Fleetwood Mac, Pat Benetar, Elvis, The Doors, The Stones, George Thoroughgood, Blondie, Van Morrison, The Monkees, and lots more. Bring your dancing shoes!! Also the band will be around for three days, so if you like to jam, bring an instrument!
This year we will have specified opportunities for networking.
We will have a NAREN consultant on-site to meet with you privately to help you plan your new at-risk program or trouble-shoot your old one! This is a free service. We will announce when you can reserve an hour. There will only be about a dozen openings. Don't want to wear the man out!! ;-)
So, yes, we still believe in having a working conference, but we also need to laugh and have fun. If we can't loosen up we go nuts in this business! And on the prettiest beach Florida has to offer! Visit the Edgewater Beach Resort.
Sign up now and save over 10%! Don't delay in making room reservations! Beach front suites (that cost no more) sold out last year early!
