Description

In the spirit of our commitment to deliver educational activities that inspire learning while simplifying complex concepts, we at the Neuroscience Education Institute (NEI) are proud to present the second annual NEI Congress on February 17-20, 2005 in San Diego. The NEI Congress builds and expands on the strong educational foundations established at NEI’s Psychopharmacology Certification Program and Academy.

Depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses affect millions of Americans, making these conditions among our nation’s greatest health problems. Knowledge about the biological substrates of these disorders is growing exponentially—as is the variety of new psychopharmacological agents available to treat them. Staying abreast of new developments can be daunting in light of everyday demands.

Over the recent years, my colleagues and I at NEI have developed an approach that has enhanced NEI’s curriculum. A paradigm shift is occurring in conceptualizing the biological basis of psychiatric disorders – namely the notion of “symptoms and circuits”. According to this approach, psychiatric syndromes can be deconstructed into their symptoms and then matched to hypothetically malfunctioning neuronal circuits that can potentially not only explain the genesis of these symptoms but also provide a target for therapeutic agents.

To learn more about this approach as it relates to existing and emerging topics in psychiatry and psychopharmacology, please join us at the Congress. This is an opportunity to learn from experts in mental health, to network with colleagues from around the globe, and to relax in beautiful San Diego.

The theme for 2005 will be: "Bridging the Gap Between Biology and Nosology: Neurotransmitters, Brain Circuitry, Symptoms, and Current Challenges in Psychiatric Illness"

All clinicians who want to improve their skills and advance their knowledge of mental health will benefit from our activities including: psychiatrists, psychiatry-knowledgeable primary care physicians, neurologists, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other professionals within the medical and mental health field.

At the 2005 Congress, you will have the opportunity to:

·Update your knowledge in six key clinical series: major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety, psychosis, pain management, and metabolic issues
·Attend interactive workshops that expand upon the clinical series
·Hear special topics that may include: child suicide, Alzheimer’s, sleep disorders, ADHD in children and adults, and substance abuse
·Network with colleagues from across the country.
·Receive comprehensive, bound guidebooks with handouts of key presentations.
·Hear the recipient of the NEI Lifetime Achievement Award
·Enjoy a lecture/performance by Richard Kogan, MD, a frequent chamber music collaborator with cellist Yo-yo Ma, a distinguished psychiatrist, and the Director of the Human Sexuality Program at the Weill-Cornell Medical Center. Explore how the medical and psychiatric illnesses of the great composers influenced their creative output.
