Romance Slam Jam was founded in 1995 by Emma Rodgers and Ashira Tosihwe, co-owners of Black Images Book Bazaar. The original slam was a one-day, in-store event created to recognize the growing achievements of African-American romance authors. Several authors including Francis Ray, Eboni Snoe, and Angela Benson gathered for a large book-signing and to meet their avid fans. Over the years, RSJ has grown from a one-day, in-store event, to a cruise, a three-day conference hosted by a bookclub, to its current state of a four-day conference culminating with the announcement of the EMMA awards (named after Emma Rodgers) recognizing the favorite romance novels of the year.

The Romance Slam Jam Literary Conference returns home to Dallas, Texas to celebrate ten years of literary fun. The four-day conference unites readers and writers of Black romance for an exciting fun-filled extended weekend of literary activities, entertainment, and awards presentations. Over 300 authors, readers, and industry professional are expected to attend.
