Description

Waste – the Social Context

May 11 to 14, 2005 Edmonton, Alberta Canada

While the solutions to our waste problems are often focused on technology, the environmental and social aspects have been widely neglected. Waste – the Social Context provides a forum for discussion on the broader implications of waste.

By bringing together researchers and practitioners from a wide variety of disciplines, the conference will provide a holistic perspective of waste management – its challenges and solutions.

Conference keynote speaker, William Rees, will discuss the ‘ecological footprint analysis’, one of the major areas of his internationally acclaimed research. His work reveals the fundamental incompatibility between continued material economic growth and ecological security. William Rees is currently a professor at the School of Community & Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Conference Topics
Presentations, and case studies, that address the following topics are invited: Attitudes and Behaviour (public perceptions, changing attitudes and actions, history of waste), stakeholder participation and involvement (public decision-making process, public participation and consultation), environmental policy (policy making and policy instruments, multi-level governance), economics of waste management (trade with waste and recycling products), sustainability of waste management (urbanization and waste management, waste management in developing countries), environmental justice and ethics (culture of waste, ethics of waste).
