The challenge for systems biology is to transform the pharmaceutical industry by providing a means for identifying pathways that are critical to disease, and discovering both on- and off-target effects of compounds. The concept of a linear drug discovery and development spectrum is being replaced by an iterative process, where knowledge gained on a systems level is applied at various points in a continuum. The dynamic nature of biology is not easily modeled. However, by combining disparate types of data that interpret changes in genes, proteins, metabolites on a cellular level, it will comprise a set of parameters that when used together can provide a definitive means of diagnosis and evaluating drugs that alter disease outcome. Using a computational approach, a pathway can be connected with a clinical endpoint and a small molecule drug. This will eventually create predictive medicine that will improve the process of drug development and increase the number of efficacious compounds.
