Description In view of the fight against the proliferation of the Small Arms week in Cameroon, the Cameroon Youths and Students Forum for Peace (CAMYOSFOP) and the Cameroon Youths Confederation (CYC) in collaboration with the UN Information Centre Yaounde-Cameroon, are organising an informative session along side other activities in commemoration of this week that runs from the 1st to 9th of July 2004. Conscious of the negative impacts of these arms in our society, it is imperative that each and every one take a leading role in eradicating these weapons. Unfortunately in Cameroon and in the Central African Sub-Region in general much still need to be done in creating awareness on what small arms are all about. It is for this reason that CAMYOSFOP and CYC has decided to organised a series of activities on this occasion.

OBJECTIVES
Ø Raise awareness among the civil society, policy makers, opinion leaders, stakeholders, forces of law and order and the government on the dangers and situation of situation of small arms and light weapons in Cameroon
Ø Lobby with the government for the amendment of legislation binding small arms and light weapons in Cameroon.
Ø Emphasise on the urgent need for intensive research on the subject in Cameroon.

TARGET
Ø Civil society, forces of law and order, opinion leaders, members of parliament and diplomatic corps.

EXPECTED NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS
Ø 50 participants
40 invited from Yaounde
10 invited from the rest of the Provinces in Cameroon

PROGRAMME

Ø Venue: Auditorium of the UN Information Centre, Yaounde-Cameroon
Ø Moderator: AATSA Atogo Senior Translator/Interpreter National Assembly Cameroon
Ø 8:00-9:00am Arrival of participants and guests
Ø 9:00 -9:20am Introductory statement by UN Information Officer and the organisers.
Ø 9:20-10:00am Key note address on “The Impact of Small Arms and Light Weapons on the Integration and social development in the CEMAC Sub-Region (Prof. PONDI Jean Emmanuel, Director of International Relation Institute of Cameroon –IRIC)
Ø 10:00-10:30 am Coffe break
Ø 10:30-11:10 am A presentation on “Outdated laws as impetus for illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Cameroon”. (NGALIM Eugine N. Executive Director CAMYOSFOP) Followed by Q&A
Ø 11:10-11:50 am A presentation on “ The proliferation of small arms and light weapons spawns insecurity, violence and ethnic conflicts in Cameroon”.( TONTEH Walters F. National Co-ordinator CYC) Followed by Q&A
Ø 11:50-12:30 pm: A presentation on “The Role of the Police in curbing the misuse of Small Arms and Light weapons in Cameroon” (ASAA Eric, .Senior. Superintendent of Police, in charge of the 3rd Police District Yaoundé) Followed by Q&A.

OTHER ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
Ø 5th July 2004. CAMYOSFOP/CYC as Guests for the Cameroon Television (CRTV) Programme “Monday Show”
Ø 6th July 2004. CAMYOSFOP/CYC as Guests for the Cameroon Radio (CRTV) Programme “Morning Safari”
Ø 9th July 2004. Theatrical/Musical presentations/ Poster Exhibitions at the explanade of Yaounde City Town Hall.

EXPECTED RESULTS
q It is expected that more awareness will be raised on the issue of small arms in Cameroon especially through the audio-visual media.
q Cameroon could become more open on the issue of small arms, hence take a leading role in the campaign in the Central African Sub-Region.
q Policy makers and parliamentarians could be become convinced on the need for the improvement of the legislation on small arms and light weapons.
q Individuals and institutions could become interested on profound research on the subject.
q These activities should encourage other civil society organisations in Cameroon to join the Cameroon Action Network on Small Arms (CANSA) to contribute to the eradication of these dangerous weapons in Cameroon and in the Central African Sub Region in general.
