The scientific programme of HealthWorlds will consist of two parallel sessions.

Track one of HealthWorlds Asia will look at how biomedical research has helped us understand how cancer progresses, and realising that “cancer” actually refers to a whole range of diseases, rather than a single disease. Understanding leads us to action, where a new array of treatments such as individualised medicine on a molecular level, will change how cancer is viewed and dealt with by society. From what distinguishes the old cancer treatment to the new, is the precision of targeting cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells alone. However, the challenge lies in educating the medical profession, where doctors will have to alter the way cancer is diagnosed and treated. Particularly with future individualised medicine, it is known that not all drugs have the same affect for all patients. The congress will present to both researchers and medical professionals, the future of oncology diagnostics and treatments, and the challenges which still lie ahead.

Track two of HealthWorlds Asia shall take the topic further, and focus on oral, head and neck cancer. It is interesting, that ethnicity does matter in cancer trends, with oral cancer being prevalent in some countries, with nose and throat in others. Early diagnosis of oral cancer is often neglected due to lack of education and realisation by the public. Dentistry offers for many countries such as India an opportunity for early diagnosis of the disease, which would involve a re-education of the profession into the role of the health provider. Bringing oral health back into general health, the congress will offer opportunities to build bridges between professions where ENT specialists, dentist, oncology specialists and general practitioners, discuss how cancer can be diagnosed early and treated in time, for the good of the patient.

Despite new treatments and methods in early diagnosis, deaths caused by cancer continue to rise world-wide. Although some forms of the disease can be cleared up altogether, the best results have come from people adopting preventive behaviours or early self-diagnosis. New and more affective public health preventive educational programmes developed from lessons learnt from the past, will be presented by state ministries and associations.

HealthWorlds Asia will consist of keynote presentations from speakers within the region as well as all around the world.
