Description

Marine resources are limited:there is competition for sea shore space and use thereof; business and tourist developments are concentrated in a few areas resulting in over eploitation and decimation of natural environments;and marine wildlife numbers are dropping as their natural habitats are threatened or destroyed. With this in mind, this conference aims to encourage business and government to stimulate the economy through sustainable use of our natural resources and to strategically develop our coastline in a manner that secures its biodiversity. This event will encourage the transfer of knowledge and skills useful to the management of inshore marine and coastal resources to community level, policy makers, planners, resource managers, community leaders and other decision-makers in southern Africa.
Key Objectives:
To create a consolidation of the themes and issues surrounding Marine and Coastal Management and how best to implement these in a comprehensive strategic manner.
To ensure environmental sustainability by integrating the principles of sustainable development into local, provincial and national policies and programmes in order to reserve loss of environmental resources.
To stimulate discussion around the development of the monitoring strategy for the South African coastline, in consultation with various role-players from government, institutions and tourism.
To assist local governments, businessmen, corporations and conservation organisations to develop a strategic conservation approach towards coastal developments.
To encourage partnership-based conservation initiatives.
To highlight the need to forge community partnership to fight environmental crime and to promote marine envrionmental education in southern Africa.
To educate communities involved in eco-toursim as to the importanceof preserving our natural heritage.
This event will encourage the transfer of knowledge and skills useful to the management of inshore marine and coastal resources to community level, policy makers, planners, resource managers, community leaders and other decision-makers in southern Africa.
